I realize its way too early to draw any conclusions by the performance of this season's top rookies but lets take a look at their starts just for fun.

John Tavares - No rookie was more hyped than Tavares this past year and as expected was the #1 overall pick in the ‘09 NHL Draft. Tavares has drawn comparisons to Mike Bossy, Gordie Howe, as well as Wayne Gretzky, especially after breaking Gretzky’s OHL scoring record for a 16 year-old. The fact he plays for the New York Islanders, I think, is a major plus for his success. He's getting ample ice time since the Islanders are a poor team, playing on their #1 line and also getting plenty of power play opportunities. He's currently trailing Michael Del Zotto for rookie scoring but is logging a ton of ice time with just over 20 minutes per game. Through 7 games Tavares has 3 goals, 4 assists and a -1 rating.

Victor Hedman has drawn comparisions to last year's #2 overall pick LA's Drew Doughty. Doughty led the team in minutes played and was on the ice in every situation, from first unit power-play to penalty kill. Hedman by all accounts also seems to be having a smooth transition and is logging more ice time than any rookie so far, with over 24 minutes per game and he's only 18 years old! Very impressive indeed. Through 7 games Hedman has 4 assists and a -1 rating for the Lightning.

The #3 overall pick Matt Duchene is also logging considerable ice time for the Avs. He's getting over 17 minutes of ice time per game and through 9 games has 1 goal and 3 assists with a -2 rating.

Michael Del Zotto of the NY Rangers is currently leading all rookies in scoring with 4 goals and 5 assists through 9 games. Other rookies who deserve early season shout outs include Jamie Benn (Dallas Stars, 7 points) and Ryan O'Reilly (Avs, 7 points).

This year's rookie class is shaping up to be a good one but I have a feeling the Calder Trophy will probably come down to Tavares or Hedman.

Rangers have two good rookie D-Men as Gilroy out of Boston U is also very good.

Actually, I am pleased to see a ton of Hockey East players that I saw play in person off to good NHL starts.  Benn Ferrerio of the Sharks (Boston College), Colin Wilson of the Preds (Boston U), James vanRiemsdyk of the Flyers (University of New Hampshire), Viktor Stahlberg (University of Vermont).  That's a pretty good amount of guys to come out of one college league in one year and all are doing pretty well - Wilson got his first NHL goal the other night vs the Bruins.

This is why akishiki and I are going to attend the UMass Lowell-Boston U hockey game next week when he comes out east   With my pneumonia or whatever I think I'm going to miss the home games vs Colgate and Northeastern this week but will be raring to go for next week!

Del Zotto is the real deal .I had Hedman in one of my fantasy leagues and after watching Del Zotto play I pulled the switch.........I think it may just be him and Tavares for rookie of the year honors but it is still to early to really tell......Del Zotto moves real well on both ends of the ice and has a knack for finding the back of the net and the open man excellent qualities for a D-man..........He is already good and is no fluke or luck involved in my opinion he moves a lot in comparison to Scott Neidermayer........

Nineteen years old and already New York Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto has something to brag about.

The Rangers' blue-liner was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for October after posting 12 points in 14 games. Del Zotto scored 4 goals, including three on the power play, and had 8 assists to lead all rookies in scoring for the first month.

I have been waiting on Logan Couture to break into the league for quite some time now he was a highly touted prospect but had a few difficulties along the way ...well he scored his first goal the other night now I will wait and see how well he is going to do......
